GoDaddy has been around for many years, but up until now I don’t understand why they can’t stick to offering just domain registrations. I had (and currently still have a few) client sites hosted with them and they’ve been nothing but a headache. Recently, they’ve been exerting effort into “improving” their services and that’s nice, but it’s not enough to keep me and my clients with them. They just suck at being a host and I don’t think they’d ever be on par with the other awesome web hosting companies out there.

GoDaddy’s prices aren’t expensive, but if you aren’t wary then you’d be surprised how much you’re going to spend on them once you’re a customer. I feel like they have some kind of magic trick that makes people want to spend on stuff that aren’t even remotely important.

I used to have a lot of clients with GoDaddy and I’ve moved most of them out because they were spending more than twice the amount they would if they were hosted by another company!

Why GoDaddy is One of the Worst

I’ve been maintaining hosting accounts with them since 2012 and all I can say is they’re a disaster. They’ve got utterly slow servers and one heck of an unresponsive support team. I know they probably host millions of websites and they probably don’t care if people are moving to other providers, but they have to work on a lot of stuff if they want to keep more customers.

I cannot even put into words how exactly I feel about their support. They are the epitome of inconsistency. I remember one time I called them because apparently PHP wasn’t working on my client’s account. After waiting for a total of about 30 minutes, they told me there was no problem and they couldn’t help me with it. I called a few hours later regarding the same problem. Surprisingly, they apologized for the inconvenience and told me the issue was fixed!

The $150 Backup Story

I briefly talked about this story in this post but here are more details for the curious.

Last December, one of my clients was having trouble with his website. They were working with three or maybe four different developers and one of them screwed up so my client wanted to restore his most recent backup. GoDaddy refused to do this for free. They wanted to charge him $150 for a simple backup restore and I thought that was crazy so I told him no, don’t even bother, just ask the other dev to fix the problem he made.

Fast forward 24 hours later — my client’s site was hacked. We had no idea who did it. No one knew if it was one of their devs or some random guy who happened to have access to their account. My client immediately contacted GoDaddy about this and asked if they could be of any help. We were shocked when they offered to restore the site’s to its most recent, working state for FREE.

So…If you were hacked you’d get a backup for free. Otherwise you’d have to pay more than a hundred dollars to get your site back up and running. It was a very unprofessional way for them to handle things and it made me doubt their integrity.

After getting their backup restored for free, my client was offered some sort of site scanner addon which was supposedly going to prevent any hack attempts in the future. Knowing GoDaddy and their insane sales strategies, my client felt obliged to make the purchase. This cost them some 75 dollars (for 1 year) and that was a total ripoff of course, considering the site scanner only checks for malicious links and code in your files. It doesn’t actually prevent unauthorized access to your account!

Ask for a backup restore = $150
Get hacked and ask for a backup restore = free, but GoDaddy would most likely make you buy a useless addon for $75

Initially, you would think that they actually gave a damn because they offered to restore the backup for free when the client was hacked. But in reality, neither situation favored the client.

Final Verdict

If you really want to use GoDaddy for some weird reason, use them as your registrar ONLY. Never use them for hosting. Their support in general is way worse than what you’d expect from a billion dollar company. I really hate how inconsistent they are; one day they want to charge you $150 for a simple backup and the next day they’re willing to do it for free. Makes me wonder if the $150 fee is fixed or if it’s negotiable.

One thing I can say for sure… With GoDaddy, you can expect to spend twice or thrice as much as you would with another host. They’re very good at making you think you need all those expensive yet unnecessary addons they offer.

Bonus info: You’ll never know how much you’re going to be charged for your next request. ;)

GoDaddy Review Updates

February 17th 2014 – GoDaddy Managed WordPress Hosting
GoDaddy introduced a new product called “GoDaddy Managed WordPress Hosting.” They claim that this hosting plan is optimized for WordPress which means users can expect a boost in speed and overall performance. It’s generating a lot of buzz lately most probably because they’re selling a package that’s very similar to WPEngine‘s $29/month plan for about 1/4 of the cost.     This review is spot on! Exactly what I would’ve said too. My first host was Goddady and that was a total disaster, website was down so often and laggy as he half of the time yet they tell me everything is fine. Honestly I want to strangle their support staff cuz of how useless they are and whom always push the blame to their customers instead.

    took me less than 24 hours to dump them. Signed up for a $9 a month scheme as I only needed a new place for developing. The long and short of it was that it was unusable even with no traffic! they were uninterested and suggested i needed a vps . I used to run my own servers so i know what i needed and it was not them!

    GoDaddy sucks as a registrar, too, IMO.
    I tried twice – several months passed between each try – to buy a domain with them, and both times I couldn’t; I don’t know if it was because I had chosen PayPal as payment method, but I couldn’t complete the purchases in any way.
    Do yourself a favor, and don’t use GD at all; you’ll avoid massive headaches.

    P.S.= In the end I registered my domain with Name.com, and couldn’t be happier.

    • Personally I wouldn’t use GD to register domains but their domain services aren’t as bad as their hosting. I use NameCheap as my main registrar and I can say they’re at least 100x better than GoDaddy.

    My email just got hacked. And the hacker used my email to ask go daddy to change my registrant contact information. After which the hacker unlock my domain name, ask for authcode and then did a transfer out. Godaddy wasn’t suppose to do a transfer in 60 days after a registrant contact had been changed, but they did! My domain got stolen and now godaddy cannot help me to track the hacker email threads, and asked me to go for arbitration with the registrar that the hacker transferred my domain name to…in China!!! How the heck am I going to do that? How much is it going to cost me? and how long will it take? and will it be successful?

    Godaddy sucke to the brink!

    • Sorry to hear that, Tony. I haven’t experienced anything that would require arbitration with domain registrars so I can’t help you with costs, timelines, etc.

      First off, it’s a Chinese registrar so we don’t know their terms or if they even care about things like this. Try contacting them and see what they can do for you — doing this won’t hurt anyway. If they don’t cooperate and/or start demanding $$$$ then I don’t think it would be worth the hassle unless you own a really, really high-profile and valuable domain (google.com for example!). What I’d do is just get a new domain, move the site there, and inform everyone concerned about the domain name change.
